Our Values

Where our values came from

Plenty of organisations choose their values based on what they want to be known for. Ours came from what our clients kept telling us, and from what our team said those things look like on an ordinary Tuesday.

We regularly ask our clients what matters most about the care they receive. The answers aren’t just about clinical skills… a lot of the feedback we receive is about how well we communicate and how well we connect.

SAHCT Client Feedback - John, Sellicks Beach: The physio who came last time was really good. I couldn't do too much that day because it was really hot but he stayed with me right until the end of the appointment anyway just to keep me company. That really meant a lot to me.

Clinical skill still matters. It’s why our clients trust us in the first place. But what sets one good therapist apart from another is the ability to communicate well and build genuine connection, and that’s what our clients notice, remember and take the trouble to tell us about.

So those became our values, alongside teamwork. We set the direction, then handed the behaviours to our team leaders and their teams to write. They’re the ones working with our clients every day, and they know which small things actually count.

Communication

We value responsive and proactive communication.

In practice, that means our team letting Therapy Coordination know if they’re running more than 15 minutes late (so they can help).

It means confirming with a client when the next visit is and who’ll be attending.

And it means replying to people promptly, even if it’s only to say you’re working on it.

SAHCT Client Feedback - John, Adelaide Hills: Jazz has been helping me strengthen my legs so I can get out of a chair more easily, but what's been great for me is that she's learned how to count to 20 with me in Latin while doing the exercises. As an old teacher, this means a lot to me.

Connection

We aim to build connection at every opportunity, and recognise that helping clients stay happy at home is about more than clinical care.

That can mean asking about someone’s goals before reaching for the perfect clinical solution, walking out to hang the washing as part of a session, or bringing in the mail.

Connection has limits, though. We’re clear with our team about where a strong professional relationship ends and overstepping begins. That isn’t about holding anyone back. Getting that line right protects our clients and our therapists alike.

Teamwork

We value teamwork because it enables the best outcomes for both our team and our clients.

That means documenting clearly enough that whoever covers your leave can pick up exactly where you left off, and telling a team-mate the difference they made to a client you share.

It also means recognising when someone else is better placed to help, and saying so.
